Charity is a sentiment that comes from within and reveals itself in compassion, such as monetary donations, mental and emotional support, or volunteer work. Without charity many victims of war, natural disasters, and other types of horrifying tragedies would not be able to survive, not only because the essentials necessary to live would be missing, but also because they may have lost everyone they loved.
Representing a confederation of Catholic relief, development and social services, Caritas is a charity organization working intently to build a better existence for the poor and oppressed in many countries and territories around the world. Their mission is to help those in need, be it by providing nourishment, housing, clothing, education, and medical care or by trying to create employment opportunities, offering emotional support or rebuilding schools.
Focusing their activities on poverty and social inequality related issues, as well as migration and asylum, ‘Caritas Croatia’ is increasingly seeking support to speed up the restoration of Vukovar. An eastern Croatian river port city and municipality, Vikovar is located at the confluence of the rivers Vuka and the Danube and was almost completely demolished during the 1991-1995 Croatian War of Independence.
Overrun, bombed, burned and terrorized, Vukovar’s ruins are testaments of the overwhelming destruction any war can bring. Cleaning up the broken dreams and rebuilding a future will take far longer than the time it took to break down the city and community walls, and crush its citizens. Caritas Vukovar, in conjunction with Caritas Croatia, and various international humanitarian charitable associations are increasing their joint efforts to speed up the reconstruction of the city of Vukovar and its surrounding communities. Their goal is to restore the area’s infrastructure and provide better shelter, more clothing, food, medicine, fuel, and other necessities for the many war orphans and families still suffering greatly from the destructive hostilities of the war.
